New PM Andy Burnham has announced his new cabinet after becoming Prime Minister yesterday.
Shabana Mahmood stays as Home Secretary and Angela Rayner is back as Housing Secretary. Mahmood was appointed Home Secretary by Starmer in September 2025 during a reshuffle caused by Rayner's resignation after she was found to have broken the ministerial code, by underpaying stamp duty. Rayner is now back in position as Housing Secretary after settling her tax affairs.
John Healey has been appointed Chancellor just months after quitting as Defence Secretary over spending plans. Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves is no longer in the cabinet.
Wes Streeting has been appointed Defence Secretary, replacing Dan Jarvis, who was only in the role for a few weeks. Streeting quit as Health Secretary in Starmer's government saying he had lost confidence in the PM. He was expected to launch his own bid for leader of the party, but then backed Burnham.
Yvette Cooper is now Health Secretary, having previously served as Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary in Starmer's government. An MP since 1997, she was also a minister in the Blair and Brown governments.
Former Labour leader Ed Miliband takes on the role of Foreign Secretary, moving from energy and net zero. Miliband has been MP for Doncaster North since 2005 and was Labour leader from 2010 to 2015, taking on the role after the 2010 general election and resigning after the 2015 general election.
Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Lucy Powell is the new Education Secretary, having previously served as leader of the House of Commons. Former Education secretary Bridget Phillipson is now Equalities minister. She previously managed a refuge for women and children who were fleeing domestic violence. Having grown up in a council house, Phillipson studied modern history at Oxford. Phillipson became an MP in 2010 aged 2026.
Lisa Nandy remains culture secretary and Heidi Alexander stays as Transport Secretary. Alex Norris is Justice Secretary.
Miatta Fahnbulleh takes on the energy portfolio. Fahnbulleh resigned a junior communities minister in Starmer's government after the May local elections. Angela Eagle has been given the Environment Secretary job.
Douglas Alexander remains Secretary of State for Scotland. Sir Chris Bryant is the new Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Stephen Kinnock is the new Secretary of State for Wales.
